Hydrographic Survey Equipment, Onshore and Offshore

Posted 16 December 2013  |  Product news

Hydrographic surveying is the scientific measurement and description (usually charting) of features which affect dredging, offshore oil exploration/drilling, maritime navigation, marine construction and related activities. Key to these surveys is information regarding echo soundings, shorelines, tidal data, tide current flows, sea floors and submerged obstruction readings that relate to the marine activities affecting marine industries and navigation.

Modern surveying relies as much on software as hardware. Equipment can be installed on inflatable craft, such as Zodiacs, small craft, AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles), UUVs (Unmanned Underwater Vehicles) or large ships.

Increasingly, with the assistance of more sophisticated collection and storage techniques, the data is gathered under one standard, then extracted and applied to the specific application at hand.

As mentioned previously, one of the key metrics of any Hydrographic survey is tidal data and Valeport offer tide gauge options for both shore-based and offshore / seabed applications together with telemetry packages for secure data transfer.

Echo sounders, both single and multi-beam need sound velocity data to correctly produce depth measurements.  Valeport offers the largest range in sound velocity sensors and profilers that have world-beating accuracy.

Some of the Hydrographic Survey equipment from Valeport includes:

MIDAS Surveyor GPS Echosounder

The MIDAS Surveyor has been designed to offer a low-cost solution for small scale hydrographic surveys. The system is supplied with a 210kHz transducer as standard, Valeport's proprietary digital signal processing techniques ensure high accuracy and reliable bottom tracking. An integral SBAS enabled DGPS receiver ensures the MIDAS Surveyor will log position and depth data for over 30 hours, as well as performing on-line correction using external heave and tide data inputs.

MiniSVP Sound Velocity Profiler

Featuring Valeport's unique acclaimed "time of flight" SV sensor, a single C cell and large Flash memory allow hundreds of profiles to be recorded. It has pre-programmed profiling patterns that allow it to be configured and deployed quickly and easily. This MiniSVP is available in either 500m rated acetal or 6000m rated titanium versions and represents great value for money for those on a limited budget.

TideMaster Portable Tide Gauge

A small, cost-effective Water Level Recorder, specifically designed for applications where the user requires an accurate record of water height, but with the added option of meteorological data via an ultrasonic wind speed and direction sensor. Suitable for use in fresh or saltwater with a 1 year (dependant on the sampling rate) deployment period. Also available with real-time data transmission.

VRS-20 Radar Level Sensor

A pulsed k-band radar level sensor designed to either work seamlessly with the TideMaster tide logger, operate standalone with optional integrated GPRS telemetry or interface to a third party data logger.
