Valeport Hydrographic Equipment Helps Shallow Survey 2015 Get Results
Shallow Survey 2015 is the international conference for experts in high resolution surveys in shallow water (less than 200 metres in depth). It was established in Sydney, Australia in 1999 and since held in New Hampshire, USA in 2001 and again in Sydney in 2003, Plymouth, UK in 2005, New Hampshire in 2008, New Zealand in 2012 and this year it returns to Plymouth, Devon, United Kingdom.
The High Resolution Surveys are performed in the Shallow Waters off Plymouth (Devon, UK) with the aim of promoting progress in seabed mapping in the coastal environment.
The Shallow Water Surveys that are used as part of the foundation of this years conference (hosted by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency and The UK Hydrographic Office) are conducted in controlled areas using a Common Dataset. As in previous years, Valeport equipment is playing a leading role in the surveying and data collection activities of Shallow Survey 2015.
The use of a Common Dataset (a range of bathymetric and backscatter datasets collected using the latest shallow water survey techniques) is a key element of the enterprise. Valeport supported this data set with an input of tidal data and various companies involved also used Valeport instruments for sound velocity data.
Once collected, comparisons can be made between the different techniques used and the merits of the different approaches discussed and assessed. To keep these assessments equitable, a new target detection test has been devised to ensure that any comparisons made are fair. The data collected can also be used as a valuable training and research tool.
Plymouth is an ideal location for these controlled Hydrographic Shallow Water Surveys both from a data gathering viewpoint and as a venue for the conference itself, which is hosted at the Roland Levinsky Building at Plymouth University, UK.
Valeport Hydrographic Survey Equipment was used by several of the participants of the Conference.
- The miniSVS and miniSVP (sound velocity profilers) were at the disposal of all participants.
- Tidal information was made available by the Valeport Tidemaster Tide Gauge.
- Additionally, the new SWiFT SVP has been deployed by one participant during a survey from an un-manned vehicle.
