April Newsletter from Valeport

Valeport NewsOceanology International (OI) was a tremendous success and it was great to see so many people visit our stand.

Find out more about OI and how out new SWiFT SVP was received. Discover how our products are being adopted by world leaders in the Dredging sector.

This release of our newsletter brings you more details of how Valeport's products are being implemented by industry leading companies in the field of Oceanography & Hydrographic Surveying.

It was another successful and busy Oceanology International for Valeport.  According to the organisers, 7,836 unique attendees from 79 countries participated, with many revisiting on consecutive days to provide an overall show attendance of 14,161. The exhibition was the largest ever with 520 exhibiting companies from 33 countries.

Another successful visit to OI for Valeport

Star of the show had to be our SWiFT SVP which gained much attention and quite a few orders!  The new Valeport fastCTD was also accepted well with much praise for its design and incorporation of a fluorometer.

It was good to see so many of you at OI, thank you for taking the time to come  our stand.  Please find below a quick round up of our latest news:

SwiftVan Oord take 15 SWiFT SVP's

Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors, a leading contractor for dredging, marine engineering and offshore energy projects has selected Valeport's SWiFT SVP for its various survey activities.

The SWiFT SVP is designed to ensure a seamless workflow and has an integral GPS to geo-locate every profile. The compact unit features high accuracy sound velocity, pressure, temperature, salinity and density measurement, plus integral GPS and re-chargeable battery.

Suited for coastal, harbour and inland hydrographic survey use, Van Oord is to deploy the SWiFT SVP as part of their operations worldwide.

Wim Balvert, Survey Workshop manager for Van Oord commented:
"We bought the SWiFT SVPs from Valeport because they are a successful and experienced sensor manufacturer, producing reliable field-proven underwater sensors, backed up by world class technology and service. Our initial investment in these SWiFT SVPs strengthens our commitment to investing in high-performance technology and will provide the highest levels of accuracy in our operations."

TideGaugeFrom Tide Gauge to Tide Table

The installation of a tide gauge is a valuable tool for real-time monitoring of the water level at your location. There is, however, another potential use for it that is often overlooked, and this is why Valeport and the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) have been working together on the process of harmonic analysis and prediction.

Many users of tide gauge technology will also at some point make use of traditional style tide tables. However, before these can be calculated, a high quality, time series of water level recordings is needed - exactly what a Valeport tide gauge will give you!

The data can then be processed using a technique called harmonic tidal analysis. This mathematically identifies the amplitude and phase lag of over 100 separate harmonic constituents present in the tidal signal recorded by the gauge.

Valeport UltraSV with T50-P
ultrasvultraSV fitting for the T50-P.

Our successful distributor in Germany, M-B-T GmbH  has integrated our ultraSV sound velocity sensor into a mounting bracket for the Teledyne Reson T50-P Seabat multi-beam echo sounder.

The ultraSV is ideally suited to this application and offers exceptional sound velocity performance to aid data correction.

FMC Schilling take the miniIPS for depth.

Leading ROV manufacturer Schilling Robotics, recently issued a bulletin 012-0135 confirming that the Valeport miniIPS will now be the standard issue depth sensor on its ROV's.

Supplied with the Seanet connector for direct connection, the 0.01% accuracy miniIPS is available in ranges up to 600bar.
Data Collection from Valeport Sensors

The Itabo Coal Terminal and Power Station provides electrical power to the Dominican Republic. This region is often hit by hurricanes so monitoring winds, waves and water level at the terminal is critical to the movement and berthing of vessels unloading coal.

When wave height or wind speed exceeds set levels vessels are unable to berth. Local engineering company, Geomedicion,Instrumentos y Sistemas, S.R.L. (G.I.S.), was asked by the terminal and power station operator, international energy company, AES, to source a solution comprising sensors, data telemetry, management and display. After considering all of the options, G.I.S. decided on an integrated system provided by OceanWise utilising their Port-Log.net software connected to a Midas DWR wave/tide recorder, TideMaster Tide Gauge and a Gill Metpak.
